KC Chiefs Shouldn’t Draft a Quarterback in First Round
With the 2015 NFL Draft approaching in May, mock drafts are everywhere. Most of the mock drafts out there have the KC Chiefs selecting a wide receiver in the first round, but Bucky Brooks of NFL.com has the Chiefs grabbing a quarterback with the 18th overall pick.
"Given Andy Reid’s reputation for developing quarterbacks, Kansas City would be the ideal spot for Mariota to grow into a franchise player.– Bucky Brooks"
I don’t understand this pick at all. The Kansas City Chiefs had ZERO touchdowns to a wide receiver last year and it wasn’t because of Alex Smith or the quarterbacks on the Chiefs roster, it was the lack of talent in the wide receiver position. Taking Marcus Mariota (or any quarterback) in the first round would just be stupid in my opinion.

Another thing to take into consideration is the fact that Marcus Mariota more than likely won’t fall to the KC Chiefs, as there are plenty of quarterback needy teams that are drafting ahead of Kansas City in the first round. There’s even a chance that Mariota and Jameis Winston could be the first two players off the board overall.
Mariota did have a solid season during his junior year with the Oregon Ducks throwing for 4,454 yards, 42 touchdowns and only four interceptions. At one point, Mariota was thought to be the best overall player available in the draft. He’s dropped off a bit since then, as Jameis Winston is now considered the best quarterback prospect and very well may go first overall.
Back to the Chiefs though, if they don’t draft a wide receiver in the first round, then they need to get an offensive lineman or an inside linebacker, NOT a quarterback. I get that not everyone is a fan of Alex Smith, but come on. Why would the Chiefs take a quarterback so early on? I’m not opposed to the team drafting one later on in the draft, but in the first round would be a waste of a pick.
If the Chiefs can beef up the offense by getting a decent line to protect Smith and some receivers for him to throw to, then I think Smith could look pretty dang good in 2015. Even when he didn’t have a line or receivers, he threw for 3,265 yards, 18 touchdowns and only six interceptions. That’s not bad considering he had barely any protection and not very good weapons to throw to.
