The KC Chiefs have some work to do in the off-season if they plan on competing for a Super Bowl next season, so here is my first 2015 NFL Mock Draft. The Chiefs have proven that they can beat the best the league has to offer, but they need a few more pieces to the puzzle that general manager John Dorsey and head coach Andy Reid have been putting together.

I used Fanspeak’s On The Clock Draft Simulator to to draft all seven rounds for the KC Chiefs. Lets take a look at the results.

Round 1, Pick 17

With the 17th pick in the first round of my 2015 NFL Mock Draft the KC Chiefs select Jameis Winston, Quarterback, Florida State. This would not be the most popular pick, but Dorsey and Reid are not trying to make friends, they are trying to win football games, and Jameis Winston is the player that will do that for them.

Winston is projected to go early in many mock draft’s, some mock draft’s even have him going first overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the draft is still a long time off, and Winston could start his descent down the draft boards.

Some people see Winston as a problem off the field, and it is hard to argue that Winston won’t be an issue for the Chiefs.

  • November 2012 – Winston and his roommate were detained by police because they police received a call that two men were at the park with a pistol. Winston told police they were just shooting squirrels with a pellet gun, and the police released Winston and his roommate with no charges.
  • December 2012 – Winston was accused of allegedly raping a female student at his apartment, but the charges were eventually dropped.
  • July 2013 – Winston was accused of entering a Burger King and asking for a cup of water. The Burger King employee gave Winston the water, but Winston poured out the water and filled the cup with soda without paying for it despite the employee objecting.
  • April 2014 – Winston was involved in a shoplifting case, where he was accused of stealing $32.72 worth of crab legs from a local grocery store. Winston was ordered to perform community service, and was suspended from the Florida State Baseball team until the services were completed. Winston apologized and insisted that he forgot to pay for the crab legs.
  • September 2014 – Winston was seen by several students on a table on campus, and was screaming a sexual expletive. Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher suspended Winston for the first half of a game against Clemson.
  • October 2014 – Winston was investigated on whether he accepted money in exchange for autographs.

With all of the off the field issues it is hard to argue that Winston even deserves to be drafted at all, but here is what Winston has done on the Field.

In 2013, Winston completed 257 of his 384 attempts (66.9%) for 4,057 yards, 40 touchdowns, and only ten interceptions. Winston was awarded with the Heisman Memorial Trophy, ACC Offensive Player of the Year, ACC Player of the Year, AP Player of the Year, Consensus All American, Davey O’Brien Award, Manning Award, and Walter Camp Player of the Year. Winston capped off his Freshman season in 2013 by leading Florida State to a National Championship by beating Auburn.

In 2014, teams seemed to have a better game plan for stopping Winston as his statistics were not nearly as impressive as in 2013. Winston finished the 2014 season with 305 completions on 467 attempts (65.3%) for 3,907 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions.

"Possesses all the natural physical tools you look for in today’s NFL. He’s big, athletic, has a strong arm and moves well inside the pocket. As for the intangibles, the list includes poise, anticipation, toughness, vision, leadership and a competitive fire. He’s the total package, physically. -Rob Rang, Dane Brugler and Derek Stephens of CBS Sports"

The Chiefs will be able to draft Winston and let Andy Reid groom him as he sits and learns behind Alex Smith for a season. Drafting Winston is not an immediate fix for the KC Chiefs, but it is a long term solution. Some people may be against picking Winston, but with the 17th pick he is a steal.
