The KC Chiefs started the 2011 season under head coach Todd Haley. but after a 5-8 record midway through the season and a 37-10 loss to the New York Jets, Haley was fired as head coach of the KC Chiefs and Romeo Crennel was named as the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2011 season.
Crennel led the Chiefs to a 2-1 record in the final three games of the regular season (would have been 3-0 but the Chiefs lost in overtime to the Raiders), and the team missed out on the playoffs and finished at 7-9.
KC Chiefs owner Clark Hunt decided to retain Romeo Crennel as head coach of the Chiefs and give him a chance to coach the 2012 season.
The Chiefs started the 2012 season 0-2 with a 40-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, and a 35-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The Chiefs secured their first win of the season in week three in dramatic overtime fashion against the New Orleans Saints. The Chiefs would go on to lose eight games in a row. The Chiefs ended their losing streak by beating the Carolina Panthers in week 13 before losing four in a row to end the season and finishing with a franchise tying worst record at 2-14.
The 2012 season was historically bad in several different areas besides the overall record of the team. Some of the lowest points of the season include.
- The Chiefs tied the 1929 Buffalo Bison with 8 games in a row without leading in regulation. Despite winning in week 3 against the New Orleans Saints they didn’t lead at all during the game. They ended the game with a score in overtime.
- The Chiefs had six turnovers in the week four loss to the San Diego Chargers.
- Jamaal Charles only had five carries in the week eight loss to the Oakland Raiders. and when asked in a press conference why Charles only had eight carries, Crennel responded by saying “Now, that I’m not exactly sure, either.”
- The Chiefs didn’t have a first down until the third quarter against an Oakland Raider’s team that finished with a 4-12 record.
- The Chiefs rushed for 352 yards against the Indianapolis Colts and still lost the game.
- The Chiefs tied the 1981 Baltimore Colts for most losses by at least fourteen points by losing 9 by at least fourteen. The final loss came in week 17 against the Denver Broncos, which ended 38-3.
The KC Chiefs fans started a “Save our Chiefs” movement which encouraged Chiefs owner Clark Hunt to fire general manager Scott Pioli and head Coach Romeo Crennel. Crennel was fired on December 31st, 2012, and Pioli was fired shortly after that.
Hunt hired John Dorsey to be the teams new general manager and Andy Reid as the new head coach.
Reid and company turned a 2-14 Chiefs team into a 11-5 playoff team, which proved just how bad of a head coach Rome Crennel was. Some coaches on this list you could make a case that other things out of their control sealed their fate as bad coaches, and that they did their best with what they had.
The case could be made that Crennel is one of the worst head coaches in the history of the NFL, and he is without a doubt the worst coach in the history of the Kansas City Chiefs.
