KC Chiefs Will Have Coaching Advantage In AFC West

The KC Chiefs will have the coaching advantage in the AFC West in 2015. With the Denver Broncos cleaning house today by firing their head coach John Fox, and telling the rest of their coaching staff that they are free to look for elsewhere for employment, the KC Chiefs have gained the advantage.

The KC Chiefs have suffered through disappointing 2-14 and 4-12 seasons with the likes of Todd Haley and Romeo Crennel at the helm, and watched the Seattle Seahawks hire and succeed with Pete Carroll, and the San Fransisco 49ers hire and find success with Jim Harbaugh. KC Chiefs fans were left wondering if they would ever have a successful head coach.
2013 was the year that things began to change for the KC Chiefs. The Chiefs went into the off-season after a 2-14 season in 2012, and cleaning house firing their general manager Scott Pioli, and head coach Romeo Crennel. KC Chiefs owner Clark Hunt went out and hired John Dorsey to be the teams general manager, and Andy Reid who had just parted ways with the Philadelphia Eagle to be the head coach.
Andy Reid and the Chiefs brought in David Culley to be the assistant head coach, Bob Sutton to be the defensive coordinator, Doug Pederson to be the offensive coordinator, Dave Toub to be the special teams coach, and Brad Childress to be the Spread Game Analysis/Special Projects (I like to call him just an offense specialist because his actual title is a mouthful).
The Chiefs took a 2-14 team and turned them into an 11-5 playoff team thanks in large part to the coaching. That turnaround really shows you how important good coaching is, and how big of an impact it can make.

The Chiefs have had one of the best coaching staffs in the league since Reid and company came to town, but it was hard to argue that the Broncos with John Fox at head coach had the best coaching in the division. Reid and the Chiefs are 0-4 against Fox and the Broncos since 2013, and the Broncos have won the AFC West in 2013 and 2014 with the Chiefs finishing second both years.
The Broncos just began their coaching search, but it is hard to imagine they will find a better head coach than Reid. The Oakland Raiders haven’t had a good head coach since John Gruden left and there’s not any reason to believe that will change. The San Diego Chargers look to have found a decent head coach in Mike McCoy, but he is still relatively unproven, therefore in theory the Chiefs should be the best coached team in the division next year.
That is at least six games that you should have the best coached team, and that could do big things for a Chiefs team that is looking to get its first playoff win since 1993. All we need is Peyton Manning to hang up his cleats and retire or leave Denver and the Chiefs will be well on their way to an AFC West title in 2015.
