Kansas City Chiefs New Year’s Resolutions

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs head into another year without a playoff victory, leaving fans saying things like what if, why not us, and there’s always next year. The truth is the Chiefs have not been closer to being a Super Bowl contender since their last playoff victory in 1993. There have been eight playoff losses since then in case you lost count.

The Chiefs need to find the final pieces of the puzzle and make a statement next year. Here is what the Chiefs new years resolution’s should be.

Find A Legit Starting Caliber Wide Receiver

There are several ways to go about finding a Wide Receiver to compliment Dwayne Bowe and the Chiefs offense, but the option they should choose is trading for Cleveland Browns Wide Receiver Josh Gordon. Gordon has had a ton of off the field issues forcing him to miss the first ten games of the Browns season for repeat violations of the leagues substance abuse policy, before returning for five games only to be suspended again for missing a team walk through.

Andy Reid has a history of being able to work with players that have character issues. Reid coached Terrell Owens and gave Michael Vick a second chance following his incarceration for dog fighting. I trust Reid’s judgment on whether they bring Gordon in. Gordon can likely be had for a third or fourth round pick and the Chiefs have eleven draft picks this year, so they have some cushion to make some moves.

Bring Toughness To The Offensive Line

The offensive line was horrid this year, but that isn’t even the part that bothered me the most. When Broncos Defender Von Miller laid the cheap shot on Alex Smith not a single offensive lineman came to his defense. It was Tight End Travis Kelce who stood up for Smith. When Jamaal Charles was getting twisted and bent into all different shapes and sizes after plays were clearly over, the offensive line can bee seen standing around watching it happen.

If you watch some of the best lines in football like the Cowboys, you don’t see guys get away with cheap shots on their teammates. We need to bring in a strong, high character guy that knows how to be a teammate. Eric Fisher was sold to Chiefs fan as an Offensive Lineman that isn’t afraid to do the dirty work, and that is one of the reasons the Chiefs selected him over Luke Joeckel.

The Chiefs should be able to find a couple of guys in the draft that match that description. They have eleven picks in the draft and they should use two of those on Offensive Lineman.

Pay Justin Houston

Justin Houston is a top five defensive player in the league and deserves to be paid like it. After his team record 22 sacks this season, the Chiefs can not afford to let Houston go. Do whatever they need to do to get him re-signed because letting him walk is not an option. Alex Tilson made a strong case for Houston to be defensive player of the year.

Be Strong, Be Brave, Be Berry

The Chiefs need to continue to rally behind Eric Berry until he defeats the biggest opponent he has ever faced. There has never been an opponent too big for Eric Berry and he has certainly shown that Cancer isn’t any different. It has been nice to see the Chiefs come together and rally behind Berry at the start of his fight, but there is still work to do and the Chiefs need to help him finish the fight.

Healing

The Chiefs are very likely in the playoffs right now had they not lost Defensive End Mike Devito and Pro Bowl Linebacker Derrick Johnson at the beginning of the season. The Chiefs biggest weakness this season has been stopping the run, and that is Devito and Johnson’s biggest strength. Latavius Murray doesn’t run for a 90 yard touchdown if Derrick Johnson is playing in that game against the Raiders. The Chiefs need to recuperate and return next season at full health.

Win A Playoff Game

The final resolution for the Chiefs in 2015 needs to be stepping up on a national stage and winning a playoff game. The rest of the NFL doesn’t take the Chiefs seriously, which was made evident after Justin Houston was robbed of Defensive Player Of The Week for Week 17 after his four sack and a forced fumble performance against the Chargers.
