Quarterback Jake Waters is coming off a 400+ yard performance and will look to get the running game going after two bad games. Waters’ main receiver Tyler Lockett continues to shines as he gets closer to owning his father’s (Kevin) school records. Lockett had 10 catches for 196 yards in the win against the Mountaineers. The senior cast of characters led by Waters, Lockett and more will look to continue the dominance of Kansas on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats looked much better on the defensive side slowing the Mountaineer offensive attack. K-State brought even a little bit more pressure last week than they normally do disrupting the flow of the game.
Now let’s take a look at five keys for a Wildcats victory on Saturday afternoon.
1) Run the Ball
For whatever the reason the Cats have not run the ball without kind of consistency. Kansas gave up over 415+ against Oklahoma last week so if K-State is going to excel in running the ball, this would be as good of time as any. The Kansas State Wildcats need to run the ball like they know they can. Just one yard on the ground for the entire game isn’t going to cut it. Charles Jones and Demarcus Robinson have to start heating up at some point and they’re running out of time.
2) Physical Presence
K-State brought back it some of its physical style defense last week vs. West Virginia forcing a few turnovers and getting sacks. At home for the final time this season look for K-State’s D to rise a few notches more. The Kansas Jayhawks haven’t been able to do much on offense so this should be the K-State defense’s dream come true.
3) Red Zone Opportunities
Jake Waters and the offense had multiple opportunities last week against the Mountaineers to score touchdowns and couldn’t get it done. The score should have been a lot higher in favor of K-State last week.
There’s an easy solution for this. The Wildcats need to score touchdowns when they’re in the red zone rather than field goals. Obviously if it’s fourth down and not vital to go for it, then take the field goal, but you get my point. Matt McCrane knocked through four field goals last week.
4) Contain Cummings
Michael Cummings has been a difference maker for the Kansas offense. Yes, the record does not show, but since Cummings took over the team has improved. The Wildcat defense will need to do what they have done all year at home, which is to rattle quarterbacks.
If the Wildcats can shut down Cummings, then the Jayhawks won’t have much of a chance at all.
5) Senior Send Off
Twenty-one seniors plus the rest of the Wildcat team want to go out as winners leaving Bill Snyder Family Stadium for the season. Look for the big time players mostly Waters, Lockett, Curry Sexton, Jonathan Truman, and Ryan Mueller to have a big impact on this rival game, as they look for six consecutive wins over the Jayhawks.
Final Thoughts
If the Kansas State Wildcats can utilize all five of these points and continue doing what they’ve done well, then I see no reason why they won’t blowout the Kansas Jayhawks. Kansas is not a good football team and Kansas State should be able to handle them with ease.
Go Wildcats!
