Kansas City Chiefs Destroy St. Louis Rams for Governor’s Cup

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs are officially over .500 for the first time in the 2014 season. The Chiefs blew out the St. Louis Rams by a score of 34-7 in a matchup of Missouri’s two football teams. The win gives the Chiefs their sixth straight victory against the Rams and they once again win the Governor’s Cup.

St. Louis struck first when Benny Cunningham was able to return the opening kickoff 41 yards close to Chiefs territory. Austin Davis later threw a touchdown pass to Lance Kendricks to put the Rams up 7-0.

At that moment, Chiefs fans were probably worried that this beat up defense was going to allow St. Louis to pull out a win early on, but this was the only time the Rams put points up on the board. The Chiefs went on to score 34 unanswered points to put the game away.

Kansas City struggled to get anything done in the first quarter, but Jamaal Charles rushed for a touchdown early on in the second quarter. Charles wasn’t done there, as he also rushed for a 36 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Knile Davis had himself a nice day with a 99 yard kick return to begin the second half. Davis also rushed for a touchdown to put the Chiefs up 34-7 (the final score) and take this game out of the Rams’ hands for sure.

Alex Smith didn’t throw a touchdown pass, but he also didn’t throw any interceptions. Smith has not thrown an interception since the first week against Tennessee when he threw three. Smith passed for over 200 yards and rushed for 24 including a 15 yard run to give the team a big first down.

Smith did fumble the ball on a mishandle to Charles, which put the Rams in the red zone. Fortunately the Rams couldn’t get any points out of it as Greg Zuerlein missed a 38 yard field goal.

I have to give big props to the Kansas City defense for Sunday’s victory. The defense combined for SEVEN sacks on Austin Davis and looked dominant out on the field, only allowing the Rams to score once. Justin Houston proved even more why he’s deserving of a big contract with three sacks on Davis. Pay the man, John Dorsey.

The turning point of the game for the Chiefs had to have been when Knile Davis took the football 99 yards down the field to put Kansas City up 17-7 in the beginning of the third quarter. The Chiefs looked unstoppable after that play and it was great to finally see a kickoff returned for a touchdown after the special teams unit had struggled throughout the season.

Now the Chiefs are 4-3 on the year and host the New York Jets next Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. The Jets lost 43-23 to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday and haven’t won since the first week of the season when they defeated the Oakland Raiders. While the Jets are due for a win, the Kansas City Chiefs have a ton of momentum right now and should be able to take care of business next weekend.
