It was reported on Monday afternoon that former Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles would be visiting the Denver Broncos this week. This led Chiefs fans to be upset at the former Chief. They don’t have any right to be mad.

Maybe it’s that KC Chiefs fans are tired of being gypped by good players to other members of the AFC West (Neil Smith to Denver, Sean Smith to Oakland, some other Smith probably to San Diego) and that’s why they’re pissed off with the news of Jamaal Charles visiting the Broncos this week.

Charles hadn’t generated any interest on the free agent market since the Kansas City Chiefs released him back in late February. It only makes sense now that the NFL Draft is over that a team is going to want to meet with him and see if he’d be a fit for their organization.

Adam Shefter tweeted the news about Charles meeting with the Broncos on Monday, much to the dismay of Chiefs Kingdom.

I noticed throughout social media that fans were actually really pissed off about this. My question is… Why? Why are fans upset? The Chiefs made a clear statement by releasing Charles despite him wanting to remain in Kansas City. That showed that the Chiefs didn’t want Charles on their team anymore.

If the team that drafted him and took care of him for his entire career didn’t want to re-sign him, then he has the right to sign with any team he wants to. Yes, even within the division and even with a huge rival to the team where he spent the past ten seasons.

I get that it sucks potentially seeing Jamaal Charles sign with Denver, but here are some things to consider before you let it bother you:

More from KC Kingdom

  1. Charles hasn’t officially signed with them yet, meaning he might not even become a Bronco.
  2. He hasn’t made an impact for the Chiefs since the early part of the 2015 season.
  3. Charles has had two ACL injuries and just isn’t the same player that he was during his prime years.

So with all of that said, why are Chiefs fans so afraid of him going to Denver? He’s not the same guy that he was in Kansas City, and even if he still does have something left in the tank, shouldn’t fans be happy for him for finding a gig elsewhere?

Charles put up with a lot of crap in Kansas City. From bad management to bad coaching to bad teams, he stuck with this team and did so with a positive attitude. He’s the leading rusher in Kansas City Chiefs history and fans shouldn’t be upset with him. It wasn’t his choice not to return to Kansas City, which is the difference between him and Neil Smith and Sean Smith.

The two Smiths CHOSE to sign with division rivals despite the Chiefs wanting them back in red and white. That’s a dick move. Being released due to having two bum knees and then re-signing with a rival is a whole different ball game.

Plus… It’s Jamaal freaking Charles. Let’s show him some respect. He deserves it.
