Royals Rumors: Royals Interested In Tony Sipp

facebooktwitterreddit

The MLB off-season is just getting started and so are the Royals rumors. The latest name to swirl around the Kansas City Royals organization is former Houston Astros reliever Tony Sipp.

The KC Royals have been most known for their deadly bullpen the past two seasons. In fact, a large reason for why this team made it to two back to back World Series (and winning one) was due to the amount of depth they had in the bullpen.

ANOTHER RUMOR: DARREN O’DAY A POTENTIAL TARGET

Dayton Moore has made it evident that he wants that to continue, as the Royals are reportedly interested in signing former Astros reliever Tony Sipp, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

More from Kansas City Royals

"At first glance, it sounds surprising that the Royals are trying to upgrade their bullpen. But according to sources, right-hander Darren O’Day and lefty Tony Sipp are among the free-agent relievers the Royals have contacted — and an addition hardly would qualify as overkill.~~~Sipp, then, could make particular sense, but a righty such as O’Day also could fit. The Royals’ starters pitched the fewest innings in the AL last season, and the team again figures to rely heavily on its bullpen. Wade Davis, Kelvin Herrera and Luke Hochevar will return, but all pitched three rounds in the playoffs."

The Royals faced Sipp several times during the postseason, the most memorable being in the eighth inning of Game 4 of the ALDS. Sipp relieved Will Harris who had loaded the bases with no outs.

Later, Sipp would allow the tying run off of an error from rookie sensation Carlos Correa. The tantrum Sipp threw on the mound after the error was pretty funny, but all of that aside, this guy was a fantastic set-up man for closer Luke Gregerson.

He ended the regular season with a 1.99 ERA, 3-4 record, and only five home runs allowed in 54.1 innings pitched throughout 60 games. While Sipp didn’t have the best success against the Royals, he was top notch in the regular season.

More from KC Kingdom

The Kansas City Royals only for sure have relievers Wade Davis, Kelvin Herrera, and Luke Hochevar in the pen for next season. Franklin Morales is a free agent so he certainly could return, Ryan Madson will likely seek more than the Royals will want to offer, Greg Holland is out for the season with Tommy John surgery, Tim Collins will likely be out for half the season while recovering from the same surgery, and Danny Duffy and Kris Medlen could both be options to rejoin the Royals rotation.

In other words, the KC Royals need to start signing some bullpen arms. Sipp could be the perfect addition to the formerly known as H-D-H tandem by being either the seventh inning or eighth inning guy.

I’m a fan of this rumor, but Sipp will likely get looks from other teams in need of relievers. Hopefully the Royals can get Tony Sipp signed to a reasonable contract to improve the Royals bullpen.
