Kansas State Wildcats: Seattle Seahawks Sign Jake Waters

facebooktwitterreddit

After a successful career with the Kansas State Wildcats, former quarterback Jake Waters has found a home in the NFL, as the Seattle Seahawks signed him on Tuesday.

Waters had an impressive career with the Wildcats, throwing for 5,970 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions in two years at K-State. He led the Wildcats to two Bowl games (one in which they won – the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl against Michigan in 2013) and went 17-9 during his time under center for Kansas State.

Despite his stats and ability to win games during his college career, Waters went undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft. He had surgery on his shoulder after the season was over, which more than likely hurt any chances of him being drafted, but he did find a home for a short period of time.

Waters originally signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, a place that could have been a decent spot for him, but was later let go so that the Jaguars could make room for quarterback Jeff Tuel.

After being released by Jacksonville, Waters spent his summer running youth football camps with teammate Curry Sexton (who also went undrafted and could not find a home in the pros), according to Kellis Robinett of The Wichita Eagle.

  • The Seattle Seahawks signed Waters on Tuesday after backup quarterback Tarvaris Jackson suffered an injury. The most interesting part of this is that Waters will rejoin his old Kansas State teammate Tyler Lockett, who was a third round draft pick by Seattle in this past year’s draft.

Lockett had an impressive kick return on Friday and should continue to impress all season long. Hopefully now Waters can prove himself and earn a permanent spot on the roster for the 2015 season.

Waters and Lockett were a good duo during their time as Wildcats, as according to Robinett (only of The Kansas City Star this time),

"Lockett and Waters combined for 106 complete passes, 1,515 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. Waters threw for 3,501 yards and 22 touchdowns on the year, setting a K-State record for single-season passing yards. During his K-State career, Lockett made 249 catches for 3,710 yards."

    Good times.

The Seattle Seahawks’ current quarterback situation is obviously Russell Wilson taking the starting snaps, but after that, Jackson was their backup guy. R.J. Archer is also on the roster. Archer went undrafted in 2010.

The chances of Waters actually seeing playing time aren’t high, but you never know. With Wilson being the type of quarterback who runs around a lot, an injury could occur and Waters could be pushed into a starting role. If so, he has one familiar face on the roster in Lockett, which I’m sure every Kansas State fan would love to see happen.

Oh, and fun fact. The Seattle Seahawks play at Arrowhead Stadium against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday in the second preseason game of the season.
