KC Chiefs: Dwayne Bowe Will Be Cut

facebooktwitterreddit

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe will be cut, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport. On Sunday, Rapoport tweeted:

Of course, this move became pretty obvious after Sunday’s news that former Philadelphia Eagle (and Missouri Tiger) Jeremy Maclin intends to sign with the KC Chiefs as soon as free-agency opens on Tuesday, March 10.

Apparently, being a “great teammate” and a willing blocker wasn’t enough to keep Dwayne Bowe with the Chiefs. I guess his $14 million cap number and his potential $10 million cap savings if the KC Chiefs designate him as a post-June 1 cut were more important.

The soon-to-be 31-year-old Dwayne Bowe finishes his Chiefs career second in franchise history in receptions (532), third in receiving yards (7,155), and fourth in receiving touchdowns (44). Bowe also made the 2010 AFC Pro Bowl team after leading the NFL with 15 TD receptions that season.

However, Dwayne Bowe’s production has slid the last three seasons. He hasn’t really been a great fit in Andy Reid‘s West Coast system.

Overall, Bowe has pretty much been the team’s no. 1 receiver for seven of his eight years in Kansas City, with the single exception of 2009. In Todd Haley’s first year as Kansas City Chiefs head coach, he put the under-performing Bowe in the doghouse (along with inside linebacker Derrick Johnson).

After that season,  Dwayne Bowe pretty much straightened up his act and provided improved effort on the field.

Kansas City Chiefs fans should expect Jeremy Maclin to take over Bowe’s no. 1 receiver role in Andy Reid‘s offense. However, the Chiefs could still add a veteran pass-catcher or nab one high in the 2015 draft.

The soon-to-be 27 Maclin offers youth, improved speed, and four years of experience in Andy Reid’s West Coast offense in Philadelphia. Jeremy Maclin enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2014, surpassing 1,000 yards and 80 receptions for the first time in his career.

In fact, Maclin set, or tied, career highs in receptions, yards, and touchdowns last season. At 27, the Chiefs are set to capture Maclin’s prime seasons.
