Kansas City Chiefs Release Anthony Fasano

The Kansas City Chiefs have been in the news quite a bit this past week, and they made headlines once again on Thursday with yet another release. The Chiefs parted ways with tight end Anthony Fasano, according to Marc Sessler of NFL.com

Fasano’s release isn’t a huge surprise, as he was due to make $2.8 million in 2015. Kansas City now saves around $1.98 million with releasing Fasano, according to Over the Cap. The Chiefs desperately need money so that they can franchise Justin Houston and try to get Rodney Hudson signed to a new deal. The team has already said good-bye to Donnie Avery and A.J. Jenkins, and might be letting Mike DeVito walk as well.

Anthony Fasano came to Kansas City during the 2013 off season and struggled to stay healthy during his first season as a Chief. Sean McGrath stepped up that year, but later retired before the 2014 season began. Fasano had a fairly healthy 2014, but was outshined by 2013 second round pick Travis Kelce, who has become a fan favorite in Kansas City.

Fasano was drafted in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys and played with them for two seasons before signing with the Miami Dolphins. From there, Fasano spent five years in Miami before joining the Chiefs in 2013.

Anthony Fasano finished his two-year career in Kansas City with 48 receptions for 426 yards and seven touchdowns. The most memorable Anthony Fasano moment came this past season when he had the “butt touchdown catch” against the New York Jets. Alex Smith threw the football and it was deflected right into Fasano’s hands, who was sitting on the ground in the end zone.

It will be sad to see Anthony Fasano depart, but I have no doubt that he’s still capable of playing in the NFL. He’s still a talented football player and has a few more decent years left in him.

Now that Fasano is out of Kansas City, it gives Travis Kelce to step up and be the number one tight end for the Chiefs. Perhaps this also opens a window for the Chiefs to draft a tight end in the first round, as Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star predicted would happen a few weeks ago in his mock draft.

Keep in mind that Kelce missed his entire rookie season due to an injury and while obviously we don’t want to see that happen again, it’s always a possibility for a football player to get injured and miss extended time. The Chiefs now will need to go out and get a decent tight end to play alongside Kelce. Demetrius Harris and Richard Gordon are on the roster, but they seem to be projects more than anything else.
