Would Jason Avant Be a Good Fit For KC Chiefs

facebooktwitterreddit

Jason Avant was waived by the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday morning. It’s common knowledge by now that the KC Chiefs don’t have any reliable wide receivers (okay, maybe Dwayne Bowe). Should the Chiefs go after Jason Avant?

First, let’s take a look at Avant’s career up to this point.

Jason Avant played his college football at Michigan and was a fourth round pick by none other than Andy Reid, back when he was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Avant spent eight seasons with the Eagles and was released last offseason due to the new contracts given to Riley Cooper and Jeremy Maclin. From there, Avant signed with the Carolina Panthers and didn’t do much there. He had 21 receptions for a little over 200 yards and just one touchdown reception (still more than the Chiefs have). The Panthers are in the same boat as far as the lack of wide receivers go, so it was a little surprising that Avant didn’t have great stats.

According to Darrin Gantt of Pro Football Talk, Avant was let go due to his opinions on the Panthers’ play calling on Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Avant was quoted saying,

"“I’ve been in the league a long time. I know two things. You never want to give a team a chance to win a game, with how much time was left on the clock. And asking a kicker to make a 50-yard field goal with the game on the line is rough sledding,” Avant said, via Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer (Quote from Pro Football Talk article linked above)"

With all of that said, I ask again, should the Kansas City Chiefs go after Jason Avant? It’s no secret that the Chiefs are lacking at the wide receiver position and it’s shown this season. Kansas City is the only team in the league that hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass to a wide receiver. Dwayne Bowe has had big games, but hasn’t been able to get into the end zone for whatever reason.

I think Avant would be a good addition to the Kansas City offense, but at the same time, he’s not a number one receiver by any means. At this point in the season though, it’s highly unlikely a team is going to waive a number one wide receiver so this could be the opportunity the Chiefs are looking for to help them down the stretch.

If it comes down to it, I would MUCH rather have Jason Avant on my team than Santonio Holmes, who the Chiefs worked out recently. I feel like that’s a no brainer for most people though.
