THREE KEYS FOR THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

Andy Reid tends to forget he has maybe the most dangerous back in the whole NFL on his team. Reid gets (short) pass happy at times, and Jamaal Charles can disappear from the game. That should never, ever, ever happen.

It happened two weeks ago in San Francisco, and the Chiefs lost.

Kansas City averages 137.7 yards per game on the ground, fourth best in the league. RUN THE FOOTBALL! Get the ball into the hands of Charles, Knile Davis, and De’Anthony Thomas, and let them win the game for you.

Philip Rivers is the quarterback, according to Quarterback Rating on ESPN, in the NFL right now. At 117.6, Rivers is miles ahead of the Chief’s own Alex Smith (88.8), who is ranked 20th in the league.

Rivers is third in the league with 1,756 passing yards, and he has 15 touchdowns with only 2 interceptions on the year. An important stat for the Chiefs is that he has only been sacked 9 times.

Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, and Dontari Poe must find ways to apply pressure on Rivers. They have to dirty up his jersey if they hope to win this big AFC West road game. Rivers is just too hot and too good right now, so he cannot be allowed to time to feel comfortable in the pocket.

For the first time ever, Pro Bowl cornerback Brandon Flowers will line up against the Chiefs. The former first round draft pick was discarded by Kansas City this past season, and scooped up by the Chargers.

Flowers is fourth on his team in tackles with 20, according to the Chargers’ team page, and has two  interceptions for San Diego already. He will be probably be fired to faces his former teammates.

The Chiefs will still be missing Donnie Avery, so it will be interesting to see if Flowers matches up the much bigger Dwayne Bowe. Will the Chiefs go after Flowers, or will they avoid throwing in his direction?

The Chiefs didn’t apparently like his size, but his was a good player for Kansas City. How he plays Sunday will be an intriguing story line.
