THREE KEYS FOR THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

Something has to give. The Chiefs average 145.3 yards a game rushing the football, good for fourth in the NFL. The 49ers only surrender 69.8 yards a contest, also fourth best in the league, according to ESPN.

Being on the road, it will be imperative for the Chiefs to control the ball as much as possible. Running the football with Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis is the best way to do that is on the ground.

The Chiefs have looked terrific in their last two games, but Charles brings an explosiveness few teams have. He can be the difference in this one if he has a good game.

Chiefs fans will finally get to see how rookie De’Anthony Thomas plays in a regular season game. He has been held out due to a bad hamstring, but looks to make his debut against the 49ers.

  • Kansas City will be without their number two wide receiver, Donnie Avery, due to an injury. This may open up an opportunity for Thomas to see more action.

Thus far this season, outside of Dwayne Bowe and Donnie Avery, all other Chiefs’ wide receivers have a total of 9 receptions for 77 yards. Their are catches to be had for Thomas.

The hope is DAT will develop into a second reliable play maker, and the Chiefs’ group of wide receivers is less than impressive, especially without Avery.

Hopefully, Thomas can step into the void, and create some big plays. If he can give the Kansas City Chiefs another viable option on offense, the Chiefs will be that much more dangerous.

A key to winning on the road against a tough opponent will always be winning the turnover battle. The Chiefs didn’t force a turnover in their first three games, and their 1-2 record reflected that failure.

Kansas City forced three in the second half in the 41-14 victory over the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football. The strong showing after intermission kept the Patriots buried, and eventually led to Tom Brady being replaced.

If Alex Smith and the offense can protect the ball, and the defense can come up with a couple of big turnovers, this much improved Chiefs’ squad might be able to steal a key road win.

It won’t be easy, but the Chiefs are suddenly at hot team. Hopefully, they can continue their success.
