The Kansas City Chiefs are enjoying the additional rest that comes with the first-round bye. As the reigning Super Bowl champions await their divisional-round opponent, there is a downside to finishing at the top of the AFC. The members of the Chiefs staff are allowed to interview for general manager and head coaching positions during the bye. In fact, two key members of the organization are having their first round of interviews today.

Peter Schrager of Fox Sports reported on Wednesday that the Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is interviewing for the head coaching opening with the Jets via Zoom. Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi is interviewing for the Jets GM job in person.

NFL News: Jets to Interview Two Chiefs Staffers

The New York Jets fired GM Joe Douglas after more than five years with the organization during the season. Head coach Robert Saleh was fired earlier in the season after a disappointing start. These departures didn't help the Jets, as they finished with a 5-12 record, extending their playoff drought to 14 years.

Therefore, it makes sense for owner Woody Johnson to target members of an organization that has had more sustained success than any other NFL franchise over the last decade.

Borgonzi has been with the Chiefs since 2009, pre-dating the Andy Reid era. He has climbed the ladder to land the assistant GM position under Brett Veach in 2021. He is expected to be a coveted GM candidate, as the Titans are also reportedly interested in the experienced executive.

Matt Nagy is similarly getting consideration after two seasons as the offensive coordinator under Andy Reid. He didn't cover himself in glory in Chicago in his first head coaching stint, but the last couple of years after his departure proved that perhaps he wasn't the problem with the Bears. He remains the only coach to have led them to a playoff berth in the last decade.

There will be plenty of interviews and due diligence over the next month or so. Regardless of what the future holds for these two key Chiefs staffers, the focus needs to be on the task at hand; the historic three-peat for the Chiefs.
