The 2025 NFL Draft has concluded and the Kansas City Chiefs are now preparing for the upcoming season. While names such as offensive tackle Josh Simmons, defensive linemen Omarr Norman-Lott and Ashton Gillotte will have the attention of fans, it will also be important to monitor Kansas City’s class of undrafted free agents.
The Chiefs have made a habit of finding talent after the draft with Tershawn Wharton, Carson Steel, and Charvarius Ward going from relative unknowns to key contributors over the past few seasons. Finding talent from a UDFA class is an added bonus to a strong draft, and there’s one prospect that can stand out from the rest and make the roster heading into next season.
New Chiefs DB Glendon Miller Has the Best Chance to Make Roster in 2025
The Chiefs secondary may be the best place for an unknown to make an impact this season, and Maryland defensive back Glendon Miller may be the player that takes advantage. Maryland’s secondary was atrocious last season, allowing 241.3 passing yards per game. But Miller was learning a new position at the time, going from cornerback to safety.
Miller earned regular time as a special teamer, appearing in 22 games over his first three seasons but started to break out when he became a starter in 2023. After recording 37 total tackles and grabbing four interceptions during that season, he had a solid encore with 39 tackles with three interceptions and a pair of pass deflections while working over the top.
While the on-field performance didn’t help the Maryland defense, Miller put himself on the radar with his athleticism. At 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds, Miller ran a 4.44-second 40-yard dash at his Pro Day and earned a 9.26 relative athletic score (RAS), which accounts for a player’s height and weight.
Miller may be able to win a track meet with his fellow safeties, but he also could win a job if he performs during camp. The Chiefs’ secondary has experienced some turnover with the departure of Justin Reid while Bryan Cook and Jaden Hicks are locked into the starting jobs. But even with Mike Edwards’ return to the team, there’s one more spot that should be up for grabs.
Deon Bush is currently the frontrunner for that role, but he suffered an ankle injury during last year’s camp and only appeared in two games last season. Fellow UDFAs Kevin Knowles and Major Williams will also compete for a start but Miller may have the upper hand thanks to his versatility.
Steve Spagnuolo loves to rotate defensive backs based on matchups and Miller could be the type of chess piece that could help. While it’s unlikely he can win a starting job heading into the season, a depth role is in play, making him one of the most likeliest UDFAs to help the Chiefs in 2025.
