Former Kansas City Chiefs star receiver Tyreek Hill suffered a devastating injury on Monday night, being carted off the field in an air cast. NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Hill tore multiple ligaments in his dislocated knee and could undergo more than one surgery, leaving no guarantee of whether the accomplished pass catcher might be able to return to the field in the 2026 season. It is a sad end to the 2025 season for one of the league's most dynamic playmakers.
Even with Hill long removed from Kansas City, Chiefs fans still feel for the receiver and what this might mean for his career moving forward. Rapoport further noted that "$11M (of $29.9M) becomes fully guaranteed if he’s on the roster in March, plus a $5M roster bonus." This would seemingly make it very unlikely that the receiver stays with the organization into the 2026 offseason.
Former Chiefs Receiver Tyreek Hill Watches Time in Miami Come to Devastating End
Even before the injury, there was a lot of noise around a potential trade or Hill being cut at the end of the year as the Dolphins undergo a needed rebuild.
For Hill, it seems that this is likely the best path, parting ways with a rebuilding team and perhaps joining a contender that can give the pass catcher plenty of time to rehab. It is too early to look at potential landing spots with a long path of recovery ahead. However, it is worth noting that with Kansas City's history with the receiver, the franchise will always be considered a potential landing spot if Hill does hit the market.
It simply is difficult to see any other potential ending to this story with the Dolphins sitting at 1-3 and heading for what is a dumpster fire of a season. Miami needs to rebuild and shed cap at the end of the 2025 season. Hill was always going to be a piece of this, even prior to his future being very much in question.
The level of injury suffered does leave room to wonder what version of the receiver is going to be able to return, no matter the rehab timeline. Regardless, the point remains that Hill's time with the Dolphins is coming to an end after Monday's disheartening injury.
Even being taken off the field, the receiver still showed energy for the Dolphins, motioning to the crowd, attempting to keep his poise. His reaction it easy to cheer for a speedy recovery and a return to form for one of the most electric playmakers the league has seen over the last decade, even if he departs Miami this spring.
