The Chiefs were in the market for All-Pro Saints CB Marshon Lattimore ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline but he was ultimately shipped to the Commanders instead.
While Kansas City and Lattimore would've been a perfect fit, Washington shelled out significant trade compensation that was far too rich for the Chiefs' blood. The Commanders sent a third-round, fourth-round, and sixth-round pick in return for Lattimore and a fifth-rounder.
General manager Brett Veach has always prioritized value with trades. Getting DeAndre Hopkins for a conditional fifth-round selection drives that point home. In a new report, it sounds like the Chiefs balked at the Commanders' offer.
Chiefs Didn't Match Commanders' Trade Offer for CB Marshon Lattimore
The #chiefs were interested and were in on CB Marshon Lattimore. But with the return that the #saints got, it was just too rich for KC to make the move to my understanding.

After already sending draft picks for Hopkins and Patriots DE Josh Uche, the Chiefs are starting to run low. I'm sure the Saints would've traded Lattimore to the highest bidder but three separate draft choices would rob Veach of the opportunity to replenish the roster.
He's been the NFL's best drafter over the last handful of seasons. As Patrick Mahomes and other stars get progressively more expensive, having enough picks to find hidden gems becomes even more important.
Add in that Veach prefers younger players in the secondary, famously having never signed a defensive back to an extension, and it makes sense why the Chiefs passed on Lattimore. He's talented though everything has a price.
The Chiefs have been pretty aggressive in looking for corner help. Pricetag for Marshon Lattimore was simply too rich. Whether they can find someone at the right price, who's an upgrade over what they already have, remains to be seen. Tight cap situation does complicate it.

Kansas City has always been about competing both now and in the future. Acquiring Lattimore would've hampered the Chiefs' ability to win after this season, and you're crazy if you think this is the last time they'll be trending for a deep playoff run.
Veach deserves to be trusted. As nice as having Lattimore would've been, there's no harm in staying firm and letting someone else outbid you.
