The Kansas City Chiefs are 0-2 to start the 2025 season. This is the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era that the Chiefs have lost their first two games of the year. Furthermore, it's only the second time Kansas City has lost back-to-back games in September.
Starting the season 0-2 provides the Chiefs a long road to make the playoffs, especially with how good the AFC West looks this year. However, there is no better quarterback at willing his team to victories then Mahomes, which is why Chefs Kingdom hasn't given up after two games.
With that being said, let's take a look at the Chiefs' next four opponents and see which games are winnable.
Week 3: Kansas City Chiefs @ New York Giants, SNF
Prior to the season, many in Chiefs Kingdom likely circled this matchup as an easy win. That assumption seemed accurate after Week 1, when the Giants managed just six points and 242 yards of offense against the Washington Commanders. While Kansas City also struggled in its opener, New York looked completely anemic.
New York's offense looked completely different in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys. The Giants' offense managed to put up 534 total yards and 37 points. Russell Wilson looked like his young self again, throwing for 450 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. It should be noted that this was against a terrible Cowboys defense.
Even with the Chiefs' defensive struggles the first two weeks of the season, they are miles better than Dallas's defense. This means they should be able to cover Malik Nabers better and take advantage of the Giants' weak offensive line.
Offensively, it could be another battle for Kansas City. The Giants have a fierce front with Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Kayvon Thibodeaux. However, if the offensive line can hold up, the Giants' secondary can be had even with the receiving corps the Chiefs have.
Given all these factors, Kansas City should still be able to come out on top Sunday night and move to 1-2.
Week 4: Baltimore Ravens vs. Kansas City Chiefs
When Baltimore and Kansas City are on the marquee, it's always a must-watch game. This is because, just like when the Chiefs play the Buffalo Bills, the game is important for playoff seeding. Nevertheless, Mahomes is 4-1 in the regular season against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens.
Still, Kansas City may be in trouble in this matchup. For three and a half quarters of their Week 1 game against the Buffalo Bills, the Ravens looked like the best team in the league. Then, in the fourth quarter, they gave the game away. Not only did their defense completely melt down and give up 22 points to Josh Allen, but Derrick Henry also had a crucial fumble.
Last week was a totally different story; Baltimore dominated the Cleveland Browns, defeating them 41-17. Although their offense only put up 270 total yards, their defense was an issue. The Ravens held Joe Flacco to a 55% completion percentage and recorded one interception.
Though analyzing the Ravens' other games this season can help get a feel for how they are playing, these two teams always play each other in close games. Thus, the margins in this matchup will be extremely thin, like they always are.
Despite Baltimore having the better roster, Mahomes seems to have the Ravens' number. Therefore, it wouldn't be a surprise if the Chiefs were 2-2 after this game.
Week 5: Kansas City Chiefs @ Jacksonville Jaguars, MNF
After the first two weeks of the season, the Jacksonville Jaguars actually look competent. New head coach Liam Cohen has helped his offense score at least 26 points in the first two games. The Jaguars' rushing attack has been a huge factor in the team's early success.
In two games, Jacksonville has rushed for 339 yards and one touchdown. That's an issue for the Chiefs, who have shown some issues in run defense. Kansas City has allowed 212 rushing yards in the first two weeks of the season.
On the surface, that's not horrible when you consider a running back hasn't rushed for over 100 yards on them. However, Kansas City has yet to find an answer for quarterback scrambles. In Week 1, Justin Herbert had 32 yards on seven rushes. Then, last week, Jalen Hurts recorded nine rushes for 15 yards and a touchdown.
Despite holding Hurts to 15 rushing yards, allowing Herbert to scramble for 32 is less than ideal. While Lawrence is mobile enough to scramble, he hasn't done it much this season, only having six carries for 18 yards.
This means Kansas City can focus most of its attention on the running backs. While it doesn't seem easy to slow them down, it can be done. Through the air, Lawrence has three interceptions in two games, so the Chiefs can definitely capitalize on that.
On defense, the Jaguars remain vulnerable against elite quarterbacks and strong receiving groups. With Mahomes under center, it’s hard to see Kansas City not leaving this game with a win and improving to 3-2.
Week 6: Detroit Lions @ Kansas City Chiefs, SNF
Two seasons ago, the Detroit Lions shocked the world when they came into Arrowhead and defeated the Chiefs 21-20 on banner night. Since then, Detroit has established itself as one of the best teams in the NFL. After defeating the Chiefs in the first game of the 2023 season, the Lions would go 12-5 and make it to the NFC Championship.
In 2024, Detroit went 15-2, but got eliminated in the divisional round because of all the injuries they were facing. Entering this season, questions surrounded the team because both of its coordinators became head coaches in the offseason.
The turnover at the offensive and defensive coordinators contributed to Detroit's struggles in Week 1. The Lions scored just 13 points (seven in the final minute) and put up 271 total yards of offense against the Green Bay Packers.
That said, their fortunes quickly changed in Week 2. Detroit's offense put up 52 points and 511 yards against the Chicago Bears. While no one knows if new offensive coordinator John Morton can continue that success, it's hard to see the Lions offense being held to six points again this season.
Moreover, with how hot and cold the Chiefs' offense has been to start the season, it's hard to see them defeating the Lions in Week 6, making the Chiefs' most likely record through six weeks is 3-3.
