What Jason Kelce's Retirement Means for Travis' Future With the Chiefs
By Joe Summers
Future Hall of Fame center Jason Kelce announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday after 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. The beloved brother of Chiefs' superstar Travis Kelce gave a heartfelt, emotional speech befitting of his legendary career.
Travis was in attendance, tearfully supporting his older brother. While the Kelce's won't be in the NFL together anymore, they reached incredible highs and are perhaps the greatest brother combination to ever play in the league.
Now that we know Jason's decision, is there any impact on Travis and the Chiefs?
What Jason Kelce's Retirement Means for Travis
There is no reason to believe that Jason's retirement decision has much of an impact on Travis' situation with the Chiefs. He's already said he's coming back next year to chase a three-peat, and he's got a legitimate chance to chase down Tony Gonzalez's 15,127 all-time receiving yards mark if he sticks around a few more years.
While Travis saw his consecutive 1,000-yard season record snapped, he was still one of the most effective pass-catching options in the NFL with 93 catches for 994 yards and five TDs. He turned things up a notch in the postseason, catching 32 balls for 355 yards and three TDs in the Chiefs' magical run.
Now the elder statesman for both the Kelce's and the Chiefs in general, Travis is one of the most important players in the NFL. Barring injury, I'll be surprised if he hangs up the cleats soon.
If the Chiefs pull off a third consecutive championship, I'd bet he'll want to get a fourth. If Kansas City falls short, that competitive fire burning inside of him will at least make a return tempting.
No matter what happens, we can celebrate Jason's brilliance and exceptional play. He helped define an era of Philadelphia Eagles football and has been an incredible influence on one of the greatest Chiefs players ever to grace the gridiron.
