Vital Charger Now Likely Out for Chiefs Game After Surprise Suspension
By Joe Summers
The Chargers will be without several key players against the Chiefs in Week 4, and now one of their best defenders will be on the sidelines too.
All-Pro safety Derwin James has been suspended for one game for repeated violations of the NFL's safety rules. That game happens to be this Sunday's, and leaves Los Angeles' defense missing one of the league's top players.
Considering the Chargers will already be without Joe Alt and possibly Justin Herbert as well, it's a disastrous development for Kansas City's divisional rival.
Chargers S Derwin James Suspended for Chiefs Game
James has a history of dirty plays. The suspension is warranted, though it is unfortunate that he'll miss such an important game. It's good for the Chiefs, yet most on the team likely would prefer to face a rival at full strength.
On the season, James has 21 tackles and one sack while allowing a 77.8% completion percentage and 82.9 passer rating when targeted. He's a physical player, best exemplified by the WWE-style tackle he put on Travis Kelce two years ago.
Kansas City is a massive 8.5-point favorite at FanDuel Sportsbook, suggesting Herbert likely won't suit up. If he does, oddsmakers are clearly expecting the loss of James, Alt, and potentially Rashawn Slater to play a major role.
For now, we know for sure that Los Angeles is a battered team entering this matchup. They've showed tremendous promise under Jim Harbaugh, but it'll take some time before they're a true challenger to the Chiefs' throne.
