Kelce's recent performances against Los Angeles are the stuff of legend

Travis Kelce is a Chargers fan's worst nightmare.

Since 2018, Kelce has diced and sliced through Los Angeles' defense with astounding success. His stats are obscene and his impact overwhelming.

The Chiefs have wins in six of their last eight matchups with the Chargers and Kelce's dominance is perhaps the biggest reason why. As Kansas City looks to effectively end the AFC West race this week, Kelce is Public Enemy No. 1 in Los Angeles (unless you're covering Taylor Swift).

Let's look at Kelce's performance in recent years to see why he gives the Chiefs an insurmountable advantage in Week 7.

Travis Kelce's Unrelenting Ownership of the Los Angeles Chargers

Here are Kelce's stats in his last eight games facing the Chargers:

  • 54 receptions (79 targets)
  • 728 receiving yards
  • 7 TDs
  • 13.48 yards per catch

That's downright ridiculous. He's had legendary performances like his three-TD effort in Week 11 last year or his 191-yard game in Week 14 two seasons ago, but his consistently great output also leaves Chargers fans terrified and resigned to the inevitable.

Kelce has a big schematic advantage against these Chargers. Under Brandon Staley, Los Angeles runs zone coverage at one of the highest rates in the league. That tendency hasn't changed and it sets Kelce up for success.

Entering last night's game against Dallas, Pro Football Focus notes the Chargers had run zone coverage at the seventh-highest rate in the league despite surrendering 8.7 yards per zone coverage target, good for sixth-worst in the NFL. That's fantastic news for Kelce and the Chiefs.

Every single catch Kelce made against Denver was against zone coverage. Unless Staley drastically changes his tendencies on a short week, the Ultimate Chargers Killer should pick up right where he left off last season.

He seems healthier now, having caught 19 of 20 targets for 191 yards and a score over the last two weeks. A rested, healthy Kelce facing the team he dominates most with a coverage he destroys?

Yeah, something tells me Kelce is in store for another MONSTER game as the Chiefs take a commanding lead in the AFC West this Sunday.
