Surprise Chiefs Preseason Cut Signs With AFC Rival in Week 2
By Jovan Alford
Former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Kelvin Joseph has landed a new NFL opportunity after being shockingly cut by the team ahead of the roster deadline last month.
Joseph was officially signed to the Indianapolis Colts practice squad along with Ronnie Harrison Jr. on Wednesday. The 24-year-old cornerback was signed to a reserve/futures contract by the Chiefs earlier this year after spending the 2023 season with the Miami Dolphins and Seattle Seahawks.
There was a belief that the former Dallas Cowboys draft pick could’ve made the Chiefs’ 53-man roster as he was working with the starters and impressing the coaches. Kansas City dealt with numerous injuries in training camp/preseason in the secondary, which allowed Joseph to show that he belongs on a 53-man roster.
In three preseason games with the Chiefs, Joseph had one forced fumble and two special teams stops.
However, it wasn’t meant to be as the Chiefs had to make the tough decision to use that roster spot on another position/player. That said, Joseph has a chance to make a strong impression on the Colts as they placed cornerback JuJu Brents on injured reserve Tuesday.
Since being taken in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the 6-foot-1 defensive back has produced 39 combined tackles, four pass deflections, and a tackle for loss across 31 games (three starts).
For a former second-round pick, Joseph has to yet find his footing in the NFL bouncing around with multiple teams. However, it seems like he might've unlocked something this summer with the Chiefs, which should help him with the Colts.
