Surging Rookie Named Chiefs' Breakout Player of 2024
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs' international rookie sensation, rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit, is drawing rave reviews not only from the coaching staff but from media as well. Expectations are high despite Rees-Zammit's lack of experience and his chances to make the roster are rising.
John Dillon of Chiefs Wire named Rees-Zammit the team's top 'breakout player' of 2024. He has a three-year contract so the team is invested in him and I wouldn't be stunned if he made an impact quickly.
Rees-Zammit could theoretically play running back, wide receiver, kick returner, and apparently kicker as well. That kind of versatility is valuable to a team like the Chiefs.
Louis Rees-Zammit Named Chiefs' Top Breakout Player
Rees-Zammit's most likely path to significant playing time is on special teams. However, with the Chiefs lacking a third running back, perhaps he could fit there too.
Dillon writes, "No player has been more hyped by the Chiefs during the offseason than Rees-Zammit, who would otherwise be perceived as a long shot to make Kansas City’s roster. A former rugby star, Rees-Zammit has the speed, agility, and hard-nosed running style that scouts look for in running back prospects, but it remains to be seen if he can translate his skill set to the gridiron."
I tend to think that someone like Xavier Worthy, Jaylen Watson, or Leo Chenal, who all have more immediate paths to playing time at key positions following departures, has a better shot at being the Chiefs' breakout player. Either way, Rees-Zammit is clearly a name to keep an eye on.
Kansas City begins training camp on July 21. That'll be the fans' first chance to see Rees-Zammit in action. If he delivers on his athletic potential, he'll quickly become a favorite in the kingdom.
