Why Rugby Star Louis Rees-Zammit is a Lock to Make Chiefs Roster
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs made a surprising splash this week by signing international rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit as part of the NFL's International Player Pathway Program, though it appears this is a much more significant move than just a gimmicky acquisition.
Kansas City officially announced the move on Friday, reportedly giving "Rees Lightning" a three-year contract with some guaranteed money. Since Rees-Zammit is part of the international program, he won't count against the 53-man roster.
Given the new kickoff rules and Rees-Zammit's unparalleled speed, it appears the Chiefs have big plans for the Welsh star.
The Chiefs Have Big Plans for Louis Rees-Zammit
Rees-Zammit has obviously never played professional football, though it's hard to imagine a better "no-risk" move than this one. If Rees-Zammit doesn't develop, he won't count against the roster limit anyway.
However, if he does turn into a solid player, the Chiefs have already inked him for three years in his prime. I think he's a virtual lock to make the roster and I imagine Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub is already dreaming of how to deploy his new weapon.
It's not hard to imagine Rees-Zammit being valuable as a kick returner and in short-yardage situations. Once a rising star for Welsh, he'll now try to make his NFL dreams become a reality.
Most signings like this don't have much impact on the regular season. In this case though, every sign points to Rees-Zammit playing a valuable role for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions.
