Royals News: Kansas City Signs Surprise Veteran Slugger to Two-Year Deal
By Joe Summers
Call me crazy, but I'm officially excited about the direction of our Royals.
It's been a busy week, full of trades and free agent signings, though now Kansas City inked a veteran slugger to a two-year deal in a surprising move.
Welcome to the Royals, Hunter Renfroe!
Royals News: Kansas City Signs Hunter Renfroe
The veteran right fielder enters his ninth professional season, having spent time with the Padres, Rays, Red Sox, Angels and Reds.
While he's only a career .239 hitter, he brings much-needed power to Kansas City's lineup. Renfroe has 177 home runs in his career with a 162-game average of 34. Outside of Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez, he's the most promising power bat in the lineup.
There are questions about what the Royals will do with outfield holdovers like MJ Melendez and Kyle Isbel, though I expect the organization to remain active in the trade market moving forward.
It's a modest deal, but combined with the Lugo contract proves that Royals' ownership is willing to spend this offseason.
I'm optimistic and can't wait to see what corresponding moves are next.
