After recording his fifth career game with 400+ passing yards and 4+ passing TDs (tied for third-most EVER), Patrick Mahomes' historic performance against the Chargers gave him a commanding lead in the MVP race.

Mahomes narrowly trailed Tua Tagovailoa entering the week. In dismantling the Chargers while Tua and the Dolphins struggled, the two-time NFL MVP gave himself the inside track to winning his third.

Despite the relatively poor performance this year, Mahomes still ranks as the best quarterback for the best team in the best conference.

We can't forget the vast contributions Mahomes is making with his legs either. He's rushing more than he ever has, currently fifth among all quarterbacks in rushing yards (214) with at least 28 yards in five of the Chiefs' six games.

Mahomes is on pace to shatter his previous career-high in rushing (381) and the way he's continually evolved his game to fit Kansas City's needs is indicative of his otherworldy ability.

While his lead in the MVP race isn't insurmountable by any means, it speaks to Mahomes' singular brilliance that he could be the clear favorite in what most would agree has been his worst statistical season thus far.

As he continues to find his rhythm and the offense cuts down on silly mistakes, Mahomes will have every opportunity to further his lead.

His first chance before the schedule gets tough comes against the Broncos. If Mahomes has another masterful performance, the NFL MVP race might be wrapped up by Halloween.
