Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid Comment on Harrison Butker After Controversial Speech
By Joe Summers
Both Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid were asked this week about Harrison Butker's controversial commencement speech drawing ire for its subject matter.
Travis Kelce has already publicly disagreed with Butker's comments while offering support to him as a teammate and player. Mahomes and Reid took a similar stance with their responses.
See what they had to say below.
Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid Share Thoughts on Harrison Butker Controversy
"I judge him by the character he shows...and that's a good person," said Mahomes. "We're not always going to agree. There's certain things he said that I don't necessarily agree with."
Mahomes was careful to distance himself from the speech, though didn't drag Butker down either. The pair have won three Super Bowls together, and it's understandable that an NFL locker room won't always share the same political and social views.
"We're a microcosm of life here," noted Reid, saying that everyone in the locker room comes from different walks of life and has their own opinion. "We respect everybody to have a voice. That's the great thing about America man."
It's a difficult spot for the duo to be in and it's understandable they had to address these questions. Nonetheless, it's the latest in a long life of off-field distractions consuming the organization right now. There was the failed stadium renovation vote, Rashee Rice's ongoing legal saga, and the arrest of two players for misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
As Kansas City tries to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls, I'd guess players and coaches alike would prefer to focus on football and put these distractions behind them moving forward.
