The Chiefs are reportedly set to play on Christmas Day against the Steelers, an unfortunate blow to those of us who work in media and also an ill-timed matchup for members of the team.

There was optimism that Kansas City would avoid the Wednesday holiday contest to enjoy an extended break, though it appears the NFL had other ideas. Just like the NBA always has the league's best players competing on the holiday, it appears Roger Goodell has a similar end result in mind.

A complete schedule will be released Wednesday night, but it looks like the Chiefs will indeed be playing on December 25th.

Chiefs Rumors: KC Slated to Play Steelers on Christmas Day

The Chiefs will officially open the season hosting the Ravens and the Bengals. Kansas City is currently favored in both games, and it's likely that's the toughest opening two-game stretch for any team in the NFL.

Baltimore and Cincinnati sit second and third in betting odds to win the AFC at FanDuel Sportsbook, so we'll get an immediate test for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. One would think that such a difficult schedule early would curry some favor near the end of the season, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

This will be a road game as well, so the players and coaching staff seemingly won't be home for Christmas.

Kansas City lost to the Las Vegas Raiders on Christmas Day in 2023. This year, Christmas falling on a Wednesday likely means that teams playing on the holiday will have short rest before or after the contest. Deep into the regular season, that's bad news for players dealing with lingering injuries.

Alas, the Chiefs appear set to take on the Steelers despite those disadvantages. We'll see what the full schedule looks like this evening, though this is a disappointing report for Kansas City.
