NFL Finalizes Big Suspension for Chiefs vs. Chargers in Week 4
The Kansas City Chiefs are 3-0 and take on the Los Angeles Chargers (2-1) in an AFC West matchup on Sunday.
The Chiefs are seeking to continue their dominance within the division and got some news heading into the game.
The Chargers may be without quarterback Justin Herbert, who re-aggravated his high ankle sprain, and Rashawn Slater, who strained his pec.
Los Angeles will also have rookie OT Joe Alt on the sideline with a sprained MCL but that isn't it. Chargers safety Derwin James was suspended for repeated violations of the NFL's safety rules and will miss Week 4. He appealed the suspension but it was upheld by the NFL on Sept. 24.
NFL News: Derwin James’ Suspension Was Upheld
Derrick Brooks, whose the hearing officer, decided it was the right call to have James miss this contest.
That is a massive blow to the Charger defense. After three games, the Florida State product was third on the team in total tackles (21) with a 75.6 run defense grade per PFF.
James has a history of delivering big-time hits. Tight end Travis Kelce was on the receiving end of one of them in 2022.
While this is bad news for the Chargers, this bodes well for the Chiefs. Kansas City has defeated Los Angeles five straight times and has its eyes set on their sixth.
Oddsmakers love the Chiefs' chances of securing the win. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Kansas City is an 8.5-point favorite with the over/under listed at 39.5.
