New Chiefs Lineman Sends Message to Patrick Mahomes After Being Drafted
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs selected BYU OL Kingsley Suamataia to close out the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, giving the offensive line a dynamic first-round talent at pick No. 64.
Patrick Mahomes already gave his stamp of approval on the choice, and Suamataia should compete for a starting job at left tackle from day one. The athletic cousin of Lions' All-Pro Penei Sewell, Suamataia sounds confident he'll ultimately make this to be a wise draft selection.
He has his own message for Mahomes as well, declaring to his new QB that "nobody is gonna touch you."
Kingsley Suamataia Has Exciting Message For Patrick Mahomes
Speaking with the media on a Zoom call after being drafted, Suamataia told reporters, "Blocking for Patty (Patrick) Mahomes himself is mind-blowing, but you know I gotta come in there and let him trust me, like, I got you."
He continued, "Nobody is gonna touch you. Even at practice, nobody is touching you. The ability that Patty Mahomes [has] and just the weapons that we have on offense with Pacheco [and] with Travis, like that’s the dynamic trio."
It's unclear if the Chiefs expect him to immediately compete for that starting role, but Suamataia sounds up to the task either way. His athletic traits should have Chiefs fans excited, and he comes from the same BYU tree that produced head coach Andy Reid as well.
Suamataia was considered a possible first-round prospect over the last month, so to land him at the end of the second is a big win. Judging by these interviews, it sounds like the newest Chief is just as excited as we are. Fingers crossed his prediction on protecting Mahomes proves correct.
