Chiefs Make Home-Run Second-Round Pick With First-Round OL Talent
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs officially found their potential left tackle of the future, trading up one selection for BYU offensive lineman Kingsley Suamataia to close out the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Suamataia had long been tied to Kansas City, sharing a college connection with Andy Reid and having been linked to the Chiefs in recent days. The cousin of Lions' All-Pro Penei Sewell, he's capable of playing either tackle position, with ideal length and quickness to fit the pulling scheme Reid has preferred over the years.
We'd mocked Suamataia to the Chiefs in the first round, so to land him in round two represents another massive win for Brett Veach & Co.
Chiefs Draft BYU OT Kingsley Suamataia in Second Round
One of the most athletic offensive linemen in the 2024 draft class, Suamataia should immediately compete with 2023 third-round pick Wanya Morris as the organization's starting left tackle.
His historical profile speaks for itself and few prospects match Suamataia's combination of production and promise.
After taking speedy Texas WR Xavier Worthy in the first round, the Chiefs once again found an ideal player for this scheme. With Creed Humphrey, Joe Thuney, Trey Smith and Jawaan Taylor already in the fold, Kansas City might have the NFL's best offensive line.
Patrick Mahomes and Isiah Pacheco's lives just got a lot easier. I'll be surprised if Suamataia isn't starting from Day One and I'm thrilled to see him become the latest member of the Kansas City Chiefs.
