Welsh rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit is one of the more exciting additions to the Chiefs' roster this offseason, bringing an exceptional level of speed and experience dealing with the new kickoff rules that resemble rugby skirmishes.

He recently appeared on The Rugby Pod with Dan Biggar, explaining that he chose Kansas City over other interested teams like Cleveland and Denver largely because of how the Chiefs intended to use him.

The hype train isn't slowing down, and I'm excited to see what Rees-Zammit brings to the table.

While Rees-Zammit is listed as a running back, it sounds like he'll primarily start on special teams early on.

"The new kickoff rules this year are absolutely massive," he explained. "That's where my main position is going to be. So I've got to fight to be a starter in that position this year."

Learning an expansive playbook like Andy Reid's will be a challenge though, and represents a big shift from what Rees-Zammit is used to.

As he notes, "It's about how quick I can learn the playbook...We've got a plan to put me in various positions, play out of the backfield at running back, be a slot receiver, just being able to use me as much as possible and be creative with me."

He's a versatile weapon and can be molded however Reid and the coaching staff see fit. While it's unlikely that Rees-Zammit makes an outsized impact on the 2024-25 team, Kansas City still has plans for him.

Since he's part of the NFL's International Player Pathway Program, Rees-Zammit won't count against the active roster. It's a win-win for all parties and Chiefs fans should be thrilled to see the rugby sensation on a different kind of pitch.
