Louis Rees-Zammit's Chiefs Contract is Perfect Low-Risk Move
By Joe Summers
Perhaps the most popular new member of the Chiefs is international rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit, who hopes to make an impact on special teams and as a running back.
Coming over from the NFL's International Player Pathway Program, the Welsh athlete's contract details were officially released to the public. At first glance, this looks like a perfect low-risk acquisition for Kansas City.
I already viewed Rees-Zammit as a lock to make the roster, though these contract guarantees don't force the Chiefs to overcommit to him.
Louis Rees-Zammit Contract Details Revealed
It's a three-year, $2.83 million deal with $230,000 in guaranteed salary. This contract is similar to that of undrafted free agents, but the Chiefs get him for three years.
Because Rees-Zammit is part of the International Player Pathway program, he would not count against the 53-man roster or the practice squad allotment. He can be part of the Chiefs without taking a roster spot away from another player, giving Kansas City a big advantage when deciding how to utilize his skills.
After the recent rule change for NFL kickoffs that mirror rugby-style rules, Rees-Zammit has an opportunity to make an impact on special teams.
This is just another example of a high-upside, low-risk move from Brett Veach and the Chiefs organization as a whole. I'm excited to see how Rees-Zammit looks on the field in training camp, though there's no harm, no foul if things don't work out.
