Latest Rashee Rice Update From Andy Reid Offers Glimmer of Hope
By Joe Summers
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke to the media on Monday, sharing an update on Rashee Rice that could offer a glimmer of hope or could be a sign of even worse news.
Reid told reporters that Rice is still undergoing tests on his knee and he did not have a definitive diagnosis yet. He did say that the second-year star would miss Week 5 against the Saints. Following Sunday night's reports that the team feared it was an ACL tear, it's a bit surprising that we don't know for sure yet.
It's possible the initial fears were overblown, yet it's also possible that Rice's knee is still too swollen to do proper testing.
Andy Reid Doesn't Yet Have Definitive Diagnosis for Rashee Rice on Monday
In all likelihood based on the initial reporting, Rice did indeed tear his ACL and will be out for the season. Nothing is set in stone at this point, so perhaps there's an opportunity for optimism until we have more information.
Rice is already one of the league's best receivers. He led the NFL in yards after catch (YAC) going into Week 4, serving as the focal point of the Chiefs' offense. After emerging as such a valuable player down the stretch in 2023, it was devastating to see him carted to the locker room on Sunday.
Fans should not be overly optimistic. Even still, Reid's comments might provide a small silver lining or could just be delaying the inevitable bad news. ACL tears often make the knee swell up too much for a clear MRI. That's most likely what's happening here.
Since Rice is still undergoing testing, we'll soon have more information and keep you updated as soon as it becomes available.
