KC Royals Rumors: Team 'Aggressive' in Adding Quality Starting Pitching for 2024
By Joe Summers
The Royals need to bolster their pitching staff in a big way this offseason, and reports indicate they're aggressively pursuing starting pitching.
We saw Kansas City bolster its bullpen by bringing Will Smith back to the organization, though that should be just the first domino in a long line of moves.
It sounds like J.J. Picollo is well aware how much change needs to come to the roster.
Royals Free Agency: Club Wants to Add Starting Pitching
Cole Ragans, Brady Singer and Jordan Lyles are the only pitchers locked into the 2024 rotation. That leaves two spots to fill, and there's a plethora of starting pitchers on the free agent market.
The Royals have reportedly been tied to Marcus Stroman, Lucas Giolito, Michael Wacha, Jack Flaherty, and Seth Lugo throughout winter meetings. Any of these players would provide a boost to the rotation, and I'm particularly intrigued by Stroman and Lugo.
Stroman comes off two strong years with the Cubs, posting a 3.73 combined ERA with over 135 innings in both seasons. He could immediately fill in near the top of the Royals' rotation and would certainly is a more accomplished pitcher than anyone on the roster.
Kansas City has been tied to Lugo before. The 34-year-old posted a 3.57 ERA in 26 starts with the Padres last season with impressive underlying metrics.
Either of those two would be massive signings for the Royals. No matter what happens, at least we can be optimistic that Kansas City's front office is being aggressive in its pursuit of improvement.
