KC Royals Rumors: Royals Projected for Disappointing Free Agency by MLB Insider
By Joe Summers
The Royals are officially on the clock, needing to field a competitive team around Bobby Witt Jr. in the near future to ensure Kansas City doesn't lose the best homegrown baseball player we've seen in blue for years.
We're calling on the organization to make significant moves this offseason, whether via trading a valuable player with club control or spending in free agency, but at least one report indicates Royals fans are in for a disappointing few months.
Here's the latest:
MLB Insider Projects Disappointing Free Agency for Royals Fans
The Athletic's Jim Bowden, one of the most experienced and respected MLB reporters in the country, released his projections for the top 40 MLB free agents this week.
Bowden breaks down the top available players and hands out his best team fits and contract projections. Unfortunately for Royals fans, none of the top 14 players are linked to Kansas City and only a handful of free agents fit the organization, per Bowden's analysis.
No. 15 Seth Lugo (RHP), No. 33 Jack Flaherty (RHP) and No. 38 Harrison Bader (CF) are the only players on the list that Bowden links to the Royals.
None of these three players would radically chance the Royals' outlook, though Lugo would be a huge boost to the rotation. He had a 3.57 ERA in over 146 innings and is projected for a two-year, $20 million contract, numbers that could certainly fit into J.J. Picollo's plans.
I'm hopeful the Royals are able to make a larger move, especially considering the Arizona Diamondbacks' spectacular run to the World Series this year, though Bowden doesn't seem sure a splash is coming.
