Kansas Basketball Lands Top-Rated Transfer Recruit
By Joe Summers
The good news for the Kansas men's basketball team just keeps pouring in.
Just a few hours after K.J. Adams announced he was returning to the Jayhawks for his senior season, Bill Self and the Jayhawks landed their top transfer portal target as former South Dakota State star and Lawrence-native Zeke Mayo.
Kansas needed perimeter playmaking and the program now has perhaps the most attractive option available, instantly giving the offense some juice with a player that'll soon become a fan-favorite.
KU Basketball Lands Top Transfer Target G Zeke Mayo
I considered Mayo to be a perfect fit for this Kansas team. He was a star at Lawrence High School and won Summit League Player of the Year honors, averaging 18.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 46.6% from the field and 39.1% from beyond the arc.
There's a strong track record for transfers who were previously won Summit League Player of the Year. Baylor Scheierman has been one of Creighton's best players since joining the Bluejays and Max Abmas was Texas' leading scorer this season.
A career 38.8% three-point shooter, Mayo will bring tough shotmaking and much-needed outside shooting to a Jayhawks offense that bogged down at times this year.
It looks like the 2024-25 Kansas team will be much deeper than the squad that bowed out early to Gonzaga and Mayo will be a huge part of any improvement.
