Chiefs safety Justin Reid gave a relieving update after Sunday's practice regarding the injury he suffered early in training camp, indicating he's now fully healthy and ready to roll for Week 1 against the Ravens on Thursday.

Reid is the most experienced member of the secondary and a respected vocal leader, so his presence against a fearsome Baltimore offense is important. He won't handle kickoffs barring a surprise, but the former Stanford star will still be on the field for Thursday Night Football.

Entering a contract year, Reid wants to prove he deserves an extension despite the numerous players facing the same situation.

Chiefs News: S Justin Reid Fully Healthy Ahead of Week 1

During his two seasons with the organization, Reid has 178 tackles, 14 deflected passes, four sacks, and an interception. He's blossomed as a leader for the franchise and it appears his hefty price tag would be the only thing keeping Brett Veach from handing Reid a large extension.

After selecting Bryan Cook two years ago and making considerable draft investments in the secondary over the last couple of years, the Chiefs have clearly been preparing for what may feel like an inevitable departure for Reid.

Veach has never signed a member of the secondary to a contract extension. If Reid secures another deal, he'll be a true diamond in the rough. It's unlikely, though he's important enough that there's a decent argument to be made in his favor.

No matter what happens, it's a blessing that he'll be healthy in Week 1. The Chiefs need him. Luckily, the injury scare was just that: a scare.
