Former Chiefs TE Irv Smith Jr. hasn't been a free agent for long but already has competition for his services. He reportedly will work out with the Browns on Tuesday after visiting the Patriots on Monday, so it sounds like he'll find a new gig sooner rather than later.

WR Kadarius Toney just signed with Cleveland, meaning Smith Jr. could soon reunite with his old teammate. The Browns' offense suffered through an embarrassing effort in Week 1 and it's clear they're exhausting all possible resources to improve the passing game.

There's no indication yet that Smith Jr. will be signed but given the injuries Cleveland suffered, they have roster spots to spare.

Former Chiefs TE Irv Smith Jr. Works Out With Browns

Star TE David Njoku will miss some time with an ankle injury and Smith Jr. is a proven pass catcher with experience in multiple systems. He's averaged 8.9 yards per reception in his career and fits the mold of an athletic, capable receiver with some blocking chops as well.

Smith Jr.'s best season came in 2020 with the Vikings, catching 30 passes for 365 yards and five TDs. He's a solid red-zone target, though the Browns actually have to sustain a drive to utilize him there.

Outside of Amari Cooper and Jerry Jeudy, Cleveland's depth chart at receiver and tight end is suddenly thin. Toney seems to have a true path to relevance, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see Smith Jr. get an opportunity with the organization.

Either way, it appears he won't have to wait much longer. Players of Smith Jr.'s pedigree aren't often released, though the Chiefs' depth at the position made him a casualty. Kansas City will square off withe Cleveland in December, perhaps both Toney and Smith Jr. will be in Browns uniforms by then.
