Fan Favorite Reveals Why He Left Chiefs in Free Agency
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs have had a wildly successful offseason but did lose a Super Bowl starter in Nick Allegretti, who joined the Commanders on a three-year, $16 million deal in free agency.
Allegretti became a favorite of Chiefs Kingdom after stepping in for the injured Joe Thuney and recently revealed why he chose to leave Kansas City.
While money was certainly a factor for the former seventh-round pick, Allegretti has his eyes on a starting spot on the Commanders' offensive line.
Nick Allegretti Reveals Why He Left Chiefs
As Allegretti put it, "I have a ton of respect for the guys in Kansas City. I enjoyed my role there, but I think I had gotten to the point in my career where I wanted to come and be a starter in Week 1. That's my goal coming to Washington."
It's hard to blame him. Thuney and Trey Smith are firmly entrenched as the starters and it's hard to imagine a starting role for Allegretti in Kansas City until 2025 at the absolute earliest. Cashing his chips in with hopes of starting in Washington makes a ton of sense, especially considering his new salary is representative of a starting position.
It's unfortunate to see a valuable depth piece who has been with the team for so long move on, but Allegretti deserves the opportunity. I'd be stunned if anyone in Kansas City was upset with him for the decision. In fact, I'd wager that all of Chiefs Kingdom is wishing him and his family nothing but the best.
He leaves the organization as a Super Bowl champion and starter and will be a legend in Kansas City no matter what happens.
