Veteran offensive lineman Nick Allegretti was one of the Chiefs' playoff heroes, stepping in for star guard Joe Thuney to start in the Super Bowl as Kansas City captured a third straight Lombardi Trophy.

For his efforts, Allegretti has now earned a big payday from the Washington Commanders courtesy of a three-year, $16 million deal. The former seventh-round pick has been with the Chiefs since 2019 and will now start on a revamped offensive line that'll likely protect a brand new QB.

Allegretti won three Super Bowl titles in Kansas City and now gets a well-deserved payday and increased role. Nonetheless, it's an unfortunate loss for the Chiefs.

Allegretti will forever be remembered for playing through a torn UCL in his elbow in the Super Bowl, and Brett Veach was never likely to match that kind of contract given Joe Thuney and Trey Smith's incumbent statuses at guard.

The move does increase the Chiefs' need on the interior offensive line in the draft. Allegretti was the most proven backup interior lineman, creating a hole that Kansas City now must fill.

There are plenty of quality linemen in this draft class, so the Chiefs shouldn't have much trouble finding a player to develop, perhaps even to take over for Thuney ultimately as he nears the end of his contract.

Allegretti deserves this payday and leaves a champion. While it hurts for the Chiefs, it's nevertheless a testament to the team's ability to develop players. Given Kansas City's recent success, I'm optimistic about the organization's chances to properly replace the new Commander.
