Chiefs Kingdom has had a lot of great news in recent days with numerous veteran contract extensions, though the fanbase was dealt a sad piece of news Thursday afternoon when it was announced that TE Jody Fortson would be joining the Miami Dolphins.

Fortson's return felt unlikely already, given Kansas City just signed Irv Smith Jr. at the same position, but Fortson had carved out a role as a fan favorite with his stellar TD grabs. It's unfortunate to see him go, espeically to reunite with Tyreek Hill in Miami.

He'll exit Kansas City with a pair of Super Bowl rings despite missing this season due to an injury, and hopefully he'll find a path to playing time with the Dolphins' high-octane offense.

Chiefs Roster News: TE Jody Fortson Signs With Dolphins

An undrafted free agent out of Valdosta State, Fortson ends his Chiefs career with just 14 catches for 155 yards and four TDs, though fans consistently clamored for more playing time, especially in the red zone.

Fortson is an ideal target when the field shrinks, given his 6'4", 226 LB frame and strong catching ability, though the Chiefs didn't have much room for him on the current roster.

Travis Kelce is the incumbent superstar tight end, the organization believes in Noah Gray and now Smith Jr. is in the fold. It makes sense that Fortson moved on, and the 28-year-old should still have his best football in front of him.

The Chiefs dominated the Dolphins in the AFC Wild Card round en route to a 26-7 victory in frigid conditions. It's unlikely Fortson will make a huge impact on Miami's offense this year, though he's a quality option in the red zone and deserves an opportunity to shine.

Kansas City is considered favorites to win the AFC at +325 odds while the Dolphins are at +1000. Miami is chasing the champions and now Fortson gets a true chance to prove himself outside of Kelce's shadow.
