Chiefs Suddenly Have Perfect Trade Opportunity After Thursday Night Football
By Joe Summers
If you didn't watch the woeful Thursday Night Football game between the Cowboys and Giants, rest assured that Brett Veach did. Suddenly, the Chiefs have the perfect trade opportunity available that could help solve a major issue.
Now that Kareem Hunt is back, Kansas City faces an interesting decision at running back. Carson Steele and Hunt aren't going anywhere, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire could return from injured reserve as soon as Week 5. The Chiefs aren't going to have four backs on the active roster, so someone has to be the odd man out.
Samaje Perine is the surest bet. As it turns out, he could be the perfect antidote to the Cowboys' disastrous backfield. Let's discuss a potential trade that could benefit both teams.
Chiefs Should Trade Samaje Perine to Cowboys
This might not be conventional, though Veach has never been shy about a midseason trade. Perine doesn't have much value for the Chiefs after the Hunt reunion, but he certainly could for the Cowboys.
He's a proven dual-threat running back, something Dallas doesn't currently have. The Cowboys rank 28th in the NFL in yards per rush attempt (3.5), with no back on their roster standing out. Perine played 38% of the snaps for Kansas City in Week 3, though that might be his highest mark of the season should Hunt look as good as expected.
Dak Prescott is one of the better QBs in the league and we all know the value that CeeDee Lamb brings to an offense. Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliot simply don't cut it. Perine is better than both of them, so why wouldn't Dallas make this trade to improve the backfield?
If the Cowboys are serious about competing, they need an upgrade at running back. The Chiefs don't need Perine anymore, so Veach would be wise to give Jerry Jones a call and see if he's interested.
It's rare that we have a win-win opportunity, yet that's exactly what this trade provides.
