Chiefs Star Offers Public Support to Harrison Butker
By Joe Summers
Harrison Butker has been under fire this week following a commencement speech he gave at Benedictine College.
It was a divisive speech, to say the least, and Butker's become a lightning rod for political takes this week. It's a break from the Rashee Rice drama Chiefs fans have dealt with this spring, though it's another example of a distracting headline when the team should be focused on winning a third straight Super Bowl.
A petition for him to be released has nearly 200,000 signatures, so star defender Chris Jones took to social media to support his teammate.
Chris Jones Tweets Support for Harrison Butker
Butker has three Super Bowl wins with the Chiefs after originally being a seventh-round draft pick by Carolina. He's made 89.1% of his career field goals, routinely coming up big in clutch moments for Kansas City.
I don't share his viewpoints, but it's his right to hold them. Releasing him isn't realistic and it makes sense that Jones has his teammate's back. The Chiefs likely wouldn't be here without Butker, and he'll likely go down as the greatest kicker in franchise history. At the least, he'll be the most successful.
The Chiefs' locker room can handle this and move past it. I'm sure many of the players were aware of his views already, and all that matters to most of them is if Butker makes his kicks.
No player or coach has been publicly asked about the speech yet, though I doubt any would have much to say if they were. Let's just hope we're done with off-field stories for the rest of the offseason.
