We've been speculating about potential Chiefs' wide receiver targets at the trade deadline all day, but a surprising new development paints the team as sellers, not buyers.
This...is not the trade rumor we expected to hear today. With Richie James reportedly nearing a return from the Injured Reserve List, it seems he may be returning for a new team instead of the Chiefs.
Trade Rumor: Chiefs Exploring Richie James Deal
James only appeared in two games so far this season before landing on the Injured Reserve List, catching one pass for six yards while fumbling a return against Jacksonville.
He was expected to play a role both on offense and on special teams after signing a one-year deal in the offseason. Despite the Chiefs' struggles at the position, it appears they don't see James as part of the solution.
Following a three-year stint with the 49ers, James was productive in his lone season with the Giants last year. He caught 57 passes for 569 yards and four TDs, showcasing dependable, soft hands with an ability to create yards after the catch.
It seemed like he was a logical fit with the Chiefs, but that obviously hasn't materialized.
This may just be Brett Veach admitting an offseason mistake. Alternatively, it could be a sign of moves to come. If the Chiefs plan to acquire a bigger name to fill the void at receiver, trading James away would be a logical decision to create a roster spot.
Fingers crossed Veach has more planned than just further weakening the weakest position on the roster.
