The Chiefs are reportedly placing RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the reserve/non-football injury list ahead of a Week 1 Thursday Night Football matchup with the Baltimore Ravens.

Edwards-Helaire will now miss at least the first four games of the 2024 season. He revealed he's been battling PTSD symptoms and missed a significant chunk of training camp practices, though this sudden move is a surprise nonetheless.

This decision makes the acquisition of Samaje Perine even more important, as he'll now step into a much larger role during the first month of the year.

Entering his fifth season with Kansas City, Edwards-Helaire is one of the most experienced members of the offense. With Jerick McKinnon no longer on the roster, the former first-round pick was meant to step into the third-down role and handle a larger workload than in recent years.

The organization has been adamant that it supports Edwards-Helaire and is prioritizing his health. It's a unique situation for the front office and coaching staff, though it's clear they feel this is the best decision for Edwards-Helaire's well-being.

Undrafted rookie Carson Steele will presumably get more work now in addition to Perine. This is still Isiah Pacheco's backfield, but Kansas City has multiple options to throw at defenses.

It's not yet clear if Edwards-Helaire will only miss the required four games or stay sidelined for longer. The team intends to do whatever is necessary to help him, even if it means he could miss most of the 2024 campaign.
