Chiefs Reportedly Sign Unexpected RB to Practice Squad
By Cem Yolbulan
The Kansas City Chiefs had to make some tough decisions ahead of Tuesday's roster cutdown deadline when they trimmed their roster to 53 players. This means that some players the Chiefs presumably wanted to keep around had to be waived.
GM Brett Veach will spend the next few days trying to add those names to the practice squad and made the first move on Tuesday night.
Emani Bailey, an undrafted free agent out of TCU, was the first player added to the Chiefs' practice squad. This comes as a surprise as Louis Rees-Zammit, Deneric Prince, or Keaontay Ingram were generally considered to have higher profiles and a bigger chance to make the practice squad.
Chiefs News: Kansas City Signs RB Emani Bailey to Practice Squad
All of the names had a legitimate chance to make the 53-man roster as the RB3. When Carson Steele unexpectedly moved up the depth chart in training camp, Bailey, Prince, and Ingram were all made superfluous.
This doesn't mean there won't be any more running backs adding to the 16-man practice squad. In fact, the Chiefs carried multiple rushers on the practice squad last season, hinting at the possibility that one more of the names above could be kept around.
Bailey is perilously small at 5-foot-7 and isn't considered to have the highest level of speed and athleticism to make up for his physical shortcomings. However, he was impressively productive in his final season at TCU with 1,393 total yards and nine touchdowns.
Considering the Chiefs' underwhelming running back rotation, it makes sense to keep multiple running backs as options behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Carson Steele. Many had hoped that would be Rees-Zammit because of his untapped potential but whether that will be the case remains to be seen.
