Chiefs Release Playmaker After Just One Week to Clear Room for Kareem Hunt
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs have officially cleared the way for former star RB Kareem Hunt to join the team in Week 4 against the Chargers, adding him to the active roster while waiving Keaontay Ingram.
It was expected that Hunt would join the 53-man group sooner than later, and now he has. He'll make his triumphant return for Kansas City on Sunday against a depleted Chargers team, though Ingram was the odd man out to make way for Hunt.
Ingram had just been elevated last week and did not record a statistic in Week 3. It's expected that he'll rejoin the practice squad.
Chiefs Waive Keaontay Ingram to Promote Kareem Hunt
The main storyline is Hunt's return. Many fans have been clamoring for this reunion since his release following a domestic violence incident and dishonesty to ownership. Years later, Hunt has rehabilitated his image to the point that Kansas City felt comfortable bringing him back.
Carson Steele should remain the starter, particularly after an effective game against the Falcons. However, Hunt could soon take control of the backfield and there's no denying his dual-threat ability.
With Isiah Pacheco injured, the Chiefs' running back room is murky. Steele is the early-down back and Samaje Perine has control of passing downs, so it remains to be seen where Hunt will fit in. It seems likely he'll get a handful of touches in Week 4 before being potentially unleashed in Week 5.
The Chiefs have a bye in Week 6, and that's the point at which everything will be fully evaluated. For now, Hunt gets a chance to shine and is finally back in Kansas City.
